New Way Working on Medium
Among the myriad questions from readers, the most frequently asked ones revolve around self-promotion. How do you introduce your work? How do you ensure you are noticed? What’s your strategy to get an audience? I’m not particularly fond of discussing self-promotion. Comedian Steve Martin’s famous response to such inquiries is, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.” According to Martin, if you focus on quality, people will come to you. I agree. It’s not you finding consumers for your work; it’s the other way around. However, being good at your craft is not enough.
sharing your insights and experiences on platforms like Medium. Writing articles or creating content about your journey, the lessons you’ve learned, and the challenges you’ve overcome can be a powerful way to connect with a broader audience. Medium is a popular platform for professionals and enthusiasts alike, providing a space to share long-form content.
By contributing valuable content to Medium, you not only showcase your expertise but also engage with a community that is hungry for knowledge and personal stories. This can further enhance your discoverability and build a following that appreciates your unique perspective.
Remember, the key is not just self-promotion but contributing meaningfully to discussions, offering solutions, and inspiring others. Share your passion, insights, and the process behind your work to create a genuine connection with your audience. This approach aligns with the idea of being discovered through the quality and authenticity of your contributions rather than traditional self-promotion tactics.
To be found, you need to be easily discoverable. In my opinion, there’s an easy way to spread and make your work found while focusing on becoming an expert in your field. Most of my current role models and sources of inspiration, regardless of their profession, are accustomed to sharing. These people aren’t gossiping at cocktail parties; they are too busy for that. They reside in studios, laboratories, or cubicles. However, they don’t lock themselves up and hoard their work; instead, they are open about what they do, consistently sharing their work, ideas, and whatever they learn online, no matter how little. Instead of wasting time “networking,” they leverage their networks. By generously sharing ideas and knowledge, they often gain consumers who can be relied upon when needed — for friendship, feedback, or financial support.
I want to put together a kind of beginner’s guide for those who dislike self-promotion. An alternative way of promotion. So, I’ll try to teach you how to consider your work as an endless process, sharing that process with techniques that may interest others, and providing tips on overcoming issues related to introducing yourself and your work to the world.
Imagine if your next boss doesn’t need to read your resume because they’ve already read your blog. Picture being a student and landing your first job because of a school assignment you posted online. Envision losing a job but having a network familiar with your work and ready to help you find a new one. Picture turning a side project or hobby into a profession because there are enthusiasts supporting you.
Or imagine something simpler and equally satisfying: dedicating almost all your time, energy, and attention to practicing a skill, learning a trade, or running a business while opening up possibilities for your work to attract like-minded individuals. You just need to showcase your work.
